Taking good care of your nails

Nail care should not be taken lightly when considering self care. Pretty nails are often part of the beauty standard. It is however, better for them to be healthy before being pretty.

Those of you who take care of you hair are familiar with keratin, the protein that composes your hair and nails. This protein helps your hair and nails grow, protects them, and strengthens them.

Did you know?

There are many reasons why nails become fragile:

  • An unbalanced diet = the type of diet you have has a direct effect on your nails' condition. They could become  yellowish and brittle.
  • Illnesses = could unbalance or weaken your immune system due to a lack of vitamins and minerals. Additionally, during cancer, chemotherapy can affect nails and hair
  • Iron deficiency = if you lack iron, your nails can become brittle and soft
  • Zinc deficiency = white spots start showing on your nails
  • A lack of vitamins A, B, and E = vitamins A and E are known as excellent antioxidants, substances that slow down or prevent negative action by free radicals to the cells and as such, they protect our body. Vitamin B, especially vitamin B8, or Biotin, are known as the hair and nails vitamins. Therefore, a lack of vitamins A, B, and E will weaken your nails.
  • Removing the nail polish = when you remove your nail polish by scratching it, you might also get rid of a layer of keratin. As such, you weaken your nails, and they could break more easily
  • Fake nails = it is strongly advised to wear them only occasionally and not throughout the year. When you take them off, the chances of removing a layer of keratin are high.
  • Biting one’s nails. They do not appreciate it much!
